Cervical screening starts from 25 years old in England. This is because cervical cancer is very rare in under 25s, and it might lead to having treatment you do not need โ abnormal cell changes often go back to normal in younger women. You'll receive your first letter when you're around 24 years and 6 months old, inviting you to contact your GP to book your cervical screening. Before you book, consider your menstrual cycle. You can't have your screening done if you are bleeding, and it's also a good idea to avoid it in the few days before your period is due. It can be tricky if you have an irregular cycle, so don't worry too much if you're unsure, you can always rearrange your appointment if you unexpectedly start your period. Once you've worked out when would be a good time for you, contact your GP surgery. Some surgeries allow you to book online, whilst some may need you to call or put in an online request. If you are anxious about booking, make sure you include lots of information in your request including when would be best for your appointment to be (date/time) so there's less chance of needing to rearrange it. Booking your first appointment can be daunting but it's a great way to look after your health, so celebrate your bravery and commitment. Your nurse will look forward to meeting you on the day, and will do all they can to ensure it's a positive experience!
